Two individuals, Janny L. Sumnall, 35, and Samuel S. Kinser, 39, were arrested by Eugene Police detectives on suspicion of breaking into homes which were vacant due to pending sale or foreclosure.
The suspects downloaded apps on their cell phones such as Zillow and Trulia, which helped them to select the homes they targeted, along with foreclosure notices on doors. They are believed to also have cased homes both day and night looking into the windows.
Most often, the burglaries occurred during daylight hours, during which the suspects removed appliances and furniture inside the homes. Police say in some cases, neighbors thanked the burglars for “cleaning” the properties they had burglarized.
Sumnall and Kinser are facing at least 10 counts of burglary and three counts of stolen property in relation to the crime spree, which occurred over several weeks.
Detectives learned throughout the investigation that other burglars are using the same methods Sumnall and Kinser are suspected of using. Anyone who has been burglarized in this manner or has information about similar burglaries is asked to contact Detective Holmberg of the Eugene Police Department at 541-682-5839.
Below are some tips provided by Eugene Police to help prevent yourself from being a victim of burglary.
* Take steps to make your home appear occupied. Interior lights and sound (talk radio)
on timers can help create an illusion that someone is home. Ask a neighbor to pick up
flyers or circulars that may be left on your front porch
* Have adequate exterior lighting. Motion sensor lighting is recommended for the front,
side, driveway and backyard areas
* Trim shrubs and other landscaping so that they cannot be used as hiding places.
* Use good locks on all doors and windows
* Keep window coverings closed
* Consider an alarm
* Consider renting your home or hiring a house sitter to prevent the home
from being vacant during the selling period
* Please talk with neighbors if you are a realtor or home seller so that they are aware of what
to expect while the home is for sale. Encourage them to contact the Eugene Police Department
