According to the City of Springfield, in 2012, Springfield has a violent crime rate of 17.3 incidents per 10,000 residents, which is about half of the national average of 33.8 per 10,000 residents and significantly lower than Eugene, which has 27.2 per 10,000 residents. Property crime is up slightly, with 508 incidents per 10,000 residents, which is comparable to Eugene (506 per 10,000 residents), and higher than the national average of 409. This rate may be attributed to the opening of the Springfield Municipal Jail in 2010, as it has become more productive to report such crimes. This information is from the 2012 FBI Crime Report.
