Oregon Students Don’t Sell Out Civil War

$

For the first time since 2012 versus Tennessee Tech, not one but every single student class at the University of Oregon failed to sell out their ticket allotment for Fridays Civil War football game versus Oregon State.

At 10:21 p.m. Sunday night, following the freshman classes turn at claiming student tickets, the Oregon Ducks Athletic Ticket Office announced on their Twitter profile that tickets still remain from every class allotment. The tickets will be up for redistribution this Wednesday.

After an upset loss in Tucson this Saturday to Arizona thus ending Oregon’s BCS bowl streak as well as choice comments from significant football players on offense regarding their lack of enthusiasm regarding a then projected Rose Bowl berth, the UO student body has voiced their frustrations as bluntly as they could by not selling out the Ducks rivalry game and last home game this season.

If student tickets still remain after the redistribution on Wednesday it will not effect Autzen’s consecutive sellout streak as student tickets have already been purchased.

It seems as though this majority of Duck students is a silent one as many loyal fans, many of which are enrolled at the UO, immediately voiced their frustrations at the student body on Twitter following the news.

  • “I’m ashamed of my fellow UO students. I don’t give a sh*t if thanksgiving is the day before, it’s the god damn Civil War” – Kaitlin (@kaitlin_dunn)
  • “For all you Oregon Students who aren’t getting your tickets. Get them. Give me your ID card. And let me illegally pretend I’m you.” – Mikey Navarro (@Mikey_Navarro)
  • “I literally feel sick right now because of my fellow students apathy…” – Kevin Wade (@UO_Kwade)
  • “If you didn’t claim your ticket for the CIVIL WAR, and you aren’t going home for Thanksgiving, you’re welcome to transfer now.” – Autzen Students (@AutzenStudents)
  • “@Prehmmr247 And it’s the CIVIL WAR. Who cares what the records are – it’s the CIVIL WAR. It’s pathetic if it doesn’t sell out.” – KEZI 9 News Jake Zivin (@JakeZivin)
  • “Having followed the team for two decades, that’s mind-blowing. But it’s a product of the BCS system. Understand it from current generation” – Rob Moseley (@DuckFootball)
  • “We’re not mad at you, students. We’re disappointed. This is OUR school. This is OUR team. Win or lose we show up & support them till the end.” – Autzen Students (@AutzenStudents)

Even fellow Lane Today Sports writers voiced their honest opinion on this news via Twitter.

  • “I remember claiming tickets my freshman year in the dorms. People were literally running out the door screaming with joy when they got tix.” – Sean Larson (@seanlarson13)

In response to the many remarks against the UO students, many who have a ticket reached out to Twitter to show what they are going through to get to the game on Friday.

  • “I’m driving up to Seattle Wednesday, Driving back 4am to make the game, then driving back to Seattle, No excuses students!” – Kevin Marable (@KevinMarable)
  • “I’m from Chico, CA, and I’ll be there!! #GoDucks” – King_Philip33 (@PhilipRobledo)

Votacion por las tarjetas de conductor para indocumentados en 2014 en Oregon

(Traducido de “Oregon to Vote on Driver Cards for Undocumented Residents in 2014”)

Property crime is up slightly, with 508 incidents per 10,000 residents, which is comparable to Eugene (506 per 10,000 residents), and higher than the national average of 409. This rate may be attributed to the opening of the Springfield Municipal Jail in 2010, as it has become more productive to report such crimes. This information is from the 2012 FBI Crime Report.

An accident on Highway 126 just east of Veneta claimed the life of a 26-year-old Veneta woman early Monday morning, according to a press release from the Oregon State Police (OSP).

At about 7:16 a.m. Monday, a 2002 Saturn four-door vehicle operated by Aimee Thomas, 26, of Veneta was stopped southbound on Ellmaker Rd. at the intersection with Hwy. 126W. She attempted to make a left turn onto the highway to travel eastbound, but the driver’s side of the vehicle was struck by a 2005 Peterbilt truck traveling westbound, which was towing two trailers loaded with powder cement.

Thomas was recently engaged, according to her Facebook page.

The force from the collision pushed the Saturn across the highway and into a ditch on the south side of the highway. Thomas was using safety restraints, but was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver of the Peterbilt, Carl Mosier, 64, of Brookings, was using safety restraints and not injured.

One lane of traffic was blocked for about three hours after the accident. OSP Troopers from Springfield and Florence are continuing the investigation, which is led by Senior Trooper Leland Farrar.

Women’s Basketball: Ducks Sneak By Waves, Win 83-80

The final outcome was good for the Ducks on Monday night in Matthew Knight Arena, but how they got there was much more turbulent than they expected. The Pepperdine Waves (2-4) gave the Ducks (3-2) a run for their money in the closing minutes of the game as they staged a valiant comeback effort that crashed just short of victory.

Photo: Slava Foursa

Photo: Slava Foursa

“We turned around and got a win after two losses, that’s important,” Coach Paul Westhead said after the game. The Ducks desperately needed a win after consecutive losses to Sacramento State and the No. 1-ranked UConn Huskies this past week and looked really good in the first half. The second half was much more of a struggle than expected, however, as the Ducks were outscored 48-35 in that period and almost lost the game in the final seconds.

“Our defense kind of slacked off,” Sophomore Forward Jillian Alleyne said after the game, “We lost our sense of urgency and that really hurt us.”

The game seemed well in-hand by halftime, with the Ducks holding a 16-point advantage and an edge in almost every statistical category. That all changed as the Waves calmly climbed their way back into the game, even after being down by 24 at one point in the second-half. The Ducks shooting in the second half was a big reason why the Waves were able to sneak back into the game. By the end of the game, the Ducks had attempted twenty more shots than the Waves and yet had made one less shot than their counterparts.

Photo: Slava Foursa

Photo: Slava Foursa

Coach Westhead pointed out some technical things that the team needs to work on offensively, including their spacing on the floor. When asked why he didn’t take a timeout while Pepperdine was threatening, Westhead commented with this:

“We’re a running team and timeouts get us out of our rhythm, it stops our run.”

At some points the Ducks run turned into the Waves’ run as they forced some Oregon turnovers and got stops when they needed to. It came mighty close to being a phenomenal come-from-behind victory for Pepperdine.

The Ducks had a big three tonight which was led by Alleyne with 21 points and 17 rebounds, followed by Katelyn Loper and Shae Rowe with 19 and 15 points, respectively. All other Ducks remained in single digits scoring-wise but the Ducks got point contributions from eight players tonight, and they needed every single one.

Photo: Slava Foursa

Photo: Slava Foursa

The Ducks will take this win in stride, as they take on Princeton on Sunday in what could be their fourth win of the season, which would match their total from all of last year. Progress is tangible for this Duck’s squad.

Levi’s Stadium To Host Cal-Oregon Game In 2014

The University of California and Santa Clara Stadium Authority have just announced today the California Golden Bears will be taking on the Oregon Ducks next year in football at newly built Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, CA instead of Memorial Stadium in Berkeley, CA. The game will be televised nationally on either ESPN or FOX on Friday Oct. 24th and will be the first collegiate football game played at the newly built stadium.

Levi’s Stadium is scheduled to become the new home of the San Francisco 49ers at the start of the 2014 NFL season. The $1.2 billion facility will seat 68,500 and serve as the site for Super Bowl L in 2016 as well as the annual Fight Hunger Bowl beginning next year.

A main draw hosting the Friday night game at Levi’s is it will allow the campus of UC-Berkeley and newly appointed chancellor Nicholas Dirks time to fully engage with faculty, students, staff and the surrounding community on how best to manage weeknight games in Berkeley for the future.

“At the same time, it gives our campus the ability to fully study the effects of weeknight games and develop solutions that not only minimize the impact when school is in session, but also accommodate our tens of thousands of fans coming to California Memorial Stadium,” said UC-Berkeley Director of Athletics Sandy Barbour.

The remainder of the Oregon Ducks 2014 conference schedule will be released by the PAC-12 sometime just after the New Year. Oregon is slated to face Colorado, Washington, Stanford, and Arizona at home and face California, Washington State, UCLA, Utah, and Oregon State on the road. The Ducks will kick-off the 2014 season with three-straight home games against FCS side South Dakota, Wyoming, and 2013 Big 10 Legends Division champs Michigan State.

Effortless Dressing with Urban Fab Styling

It’s the most wonderful time of the year, these last few weeks of the calendar, filled with joy, friends, gatherings and…. pressure! And each year, you wonder if there’s a simple way you could remove even just a bit of that pressure. Short answer: Yes! Plan your outfits ahead of time for any holiday happenings you’ve got coming up, and you don’t even have to buy anything new; just use what you already have in your wardrobe.

We’ve paired only six items of clothing (and two pairs of shoes) to create six outfits for six typical events, and instead of uttering those dreaded words, “I have NOTHING to wear!” you may actually look forward to getting ready! Think of the time — and money — you’ll save by shopping your own closet!

Pieces:

Blue jersey knit blouse (long sleeved)

Grey and black patterned blouse (sleeveless)

Patterned dress

Light grey cardigan

Grey trousers

Black ponte (knit) pants

Shoes:

Grey patent leather heels

Brown leather booties

Outfit #1:

Event: Thanksgiving Dinner

Items: Blue blouse, grey trousers, grey heels

Why it Works: This is smart enough for a dinner, but comfortable enough to move around in the kitchen and be an attentive host. Its tone is understated and refined, but won’t make any guest feel uncomfortable if they’re over- or under-dressed.

Outfit #2:

Event: Neighborhood Party

Photo: Rachel Williams - Urban Fab Styling

Photo: Rachel Williams – Urban Fab Styling

Items: Dress, cardigan, brown booties

Why it Works: The dress is pretty and polished, which tells your neighbors that you’re more than just the gardening clothes they usually see you in! The cardigan will keep you warm on the walk over, and the booties show off your more playful side.

Outfit #3:

Photo: Rachel Williams - Urban Fab Styling

Event: Office Party

Items: Dress, grey heels

Why it Works: The dress is demure enough in neckline and knee length to be appropriate in an office setting, but with enough visual interest to show that you’re not a boring corporate drone. The heels are polished without being flashy, and the pattern in the dress will hide any spills when someone bumps into you because the room is crowded!

Outfit #4:

Event: Girls’ Night Out

Items: Grey and black print blouse, black pants, grey heels

Photo: Rachel Williams - Urban Fab Styling

Photo: Rachel Williams – Urban Fab Styling

Why it Works: Grab your favorite girls and head out to celebrate your friendship! You’ll probably be indoors, so you can get away with a sleeveless blouse that’s frilly and feminine. The pants are comfy enough for a late night, and the heels add a pop of shine.

Outfit #5:

Event: Family Dinner

Photo: Rachel Williams - Urban Fab Styling

Photo: Rachel Williams – Urban Fab Styling

Items: Grey and black print blouse, cardigan, grey trousers, brown booties

Why it Works: This is dressy enough for a formal dinner, but with style and comfort appropriate for the occasion. Plus if you get too warm by the fire later, you can remove the cardigan.

Outfit #6:

Event: Social Evening (like a school play, gift exchange, or volunteering gig)

Items: Blue blouse, black pants, brown booties

Photo: Rachel Williams - Urban Fab Styling

Photo: Rachel Williams – Urban Fab Styling

Why it Works: This outfit is all about comfort, allowing you to focus on the event, not fuss with your clothes. Bonus: the bright top is cheerful and wintery without being cliché red or green.

Many thanks to Jennie Bannister for being a willing model!

Conestoga Hut: 90 Minutes to a New Home in Springfield

The second Conestoga Hut in Springfield for a homeless individual was constructed Wednesday afternoon in the parking lot of First Baptist Church.

On Oct. 7, 2013, the Springfield City Council voted unanimously to expand its homeless vehicle program from one to three vehicles or temporary structures per designated location.

So far, so good!

The first Conestoga Hut was placed behind the First Baptist Church at 1175 G St. in June 2013. According to Pastor Jeff Savage of First Baptist Church, the program has been successful so far in its early stages, and said the only problem the church has encountered was with other homeless individuals attempting to sleep in the vicinity of the Conestoga Hut, thinking it may be legal to do so.

“We are a host site and I participate in the Springfield Shelter Rights Alliance, which is a community effort between the faith community and others who support what we are doing,” said Savage.

A home for just a few hundred dollars and 90 minutes of work

The all-volunteer crew who built the hut, led by Erik Debuhr of Community Supported Shelters, built the hut from start to finish in an impressive 90 minutes. The materials for each hut cost about $1,200, and the money to build the huts in Springfield so far have come from community support, fundraisers and a project initiated by Thurston High School business students.

The second hut will also be located in the parking lot of First Baptist Church, but Savage hopes to continue raising awareness of the program to house the homeless, which is overseen by St. Vincent de Paul.

But, where else do we put them?

“That’s the biggest challenge, to get a site that succeeds, then people would understand how it works. I think it’ll catch on, it has been hugely successful. It’s an innovative way to reuse and use materials, and a blessing for the people who get it [a hut]. We certainly thank First Baptist Church and Pastor Joe Savage,” said Springfield Mayor Christine Lundberg.

Mayor Lundberg also suggested with the recent change in city ordinance allowing more vehicles or structures per designated location, the program may be able to get industrial sites and more churches on board with the program, helping to house more of Springfield’s homeless.

St. Vincent de Paul conducts background and screening checks to ensure the individuals accepted in the program do not pose a threat to the neighborhood they are placed in, according to Savage.
