Oregon Loses To Cal State Fullerton In The 9th, 3-2

After falling to Cal State Fullerton last night in a blowout, the Oregon Ducks played a better game Saturday, but were still unable to hurdle over the Titans for the win, losing in the ninth inning by a score of 3-2. Greg Velazquez came away with the game-winning sacrifice fly into deep left-center field for the Titans in the top of the ninth, bringing in Matt Chapman for the go-ahead run from third.

Cal State Fullerton once again got the scoring going early, racking up 2 runs in the top of the second. Both runs came courtesy of an Austin Diemer single into the outfield, which brought in Jared Deacon from third and Taylor Bryant from second.

When the rain started to pour in during the third inning, the Ducks seemed to have got what they needed to turn the game around in their favor. In the bottom of the third, Oregon’s Aaron Payne brought in Connor Hofmann from second on a deep single into the outfield to put the Ducks first run on the board.

Following a short rain delay between the third and fourth innings, starting pitcher Matt Krook struck out Cal State Fullerton’s first five batters for the Ducks. By games end, Krook tallied a total of 8 strikeouts for Oregon while only giving up 3 hits, 2 walks, and 2 earned runs.

Oregon put the tying run on the board in the bottom of the fourth inning when Kyle Garlick and Jack Kruger executed a successful double steal from first and third, bringing in Garlick from third.

Both teams’ pitching staffs then shut down the other teams’ batters until the end of the game. Cal State Fullerton’s Justin Garza gave the Titans another great start, going 8 innings and giving up 6 hits, 2 earned runs, 0 walks, and struck out 4 batters.

Neither team broke the deadlock until the top of the ninth when, following two straight singles by Chapman and J.D. Davis off of Oregon reliever Trent Paddon, Velazquez hit a sacrifice fly to the warning track in left-center field giving Chapman plenty of time to score from third and give the Titans the lead.

Oregon, looking to at least send the game into extras, led off the bottom of the ninth inning with a single by Tyler Baumgarter to put the tying run on first. Following two-straight grounders that led to outs at first base, A.J. Balta cranked one toward the short fence in right field but came up just a few feet short of a walk-off homer and instead resulted in a catch by right fielder Clay Williamson to give Cal State Fullerton the win.

Oregon will take on Cal State Fullerton in the final game of their three-game series tomorrow at PK Park with first pitch just after noon.

After Jillian Alleyne became the fastest Duck to 1,000 career points on Friday, two of her teammates joined her in the 1,000 point club Sunday.

With barely three and a half minutes gone in the game, Ariel Thomas joined the 1,000 point club with her second basket from beyond the arc. In the second half, Katelyn Loper eclipsed the 1,000 point plateau, doing so also on a three-pointer with 16:41 left in the contest.

The Ducks (15-14, 6-12 Pac-12) played a solid all-around team game, with five players in double figures in scoring, and out-rebounded the Wildcats 44-31.

Although the regular season is over, the Ducks’ season continues in the Pac-12 tournament as the #10 seed, and will take on #7 seed Washington State Thursday at 6 p.m. in Seattle. The game will air on the Pac-12 Network.

Photo: Oregon State Police

At about 11 p.m. on March 2, a commercial truck was disabled along the shoulder of northbound I-5 near milepost 90, with William Marion Steinbrook, 54, of Yoncalla, a roadside assistance mechanic rendering assistance, standing between the semi-trailer of the commercial truck, and his roadside assistance vehicle parked behind the truck.

An International truck pulling an Auto Zone trailer operated by William Dean Penicks, 56, of Norco, Calif., was traveling over a hill in the right lane and crossed the fog line, striking the back of the disabled semi-trailer. The trailer and truck were pushed forward by the impact, pinning Steinbrook between the truck and his assistance vehicle. Steinbrook was pronounced dead at the scene.

Adam Wade Pennington, 43, of Hemet, Calif., a male passenger in the International truck, was in the sleeper berth of the truck at the time of impact, and was also pronounced dead at the scene.

Penicks was taken to a Roseburg hospital for treatment of injuries not believed to be life-threatening. The driver of the disabled truck was not injured, and was outside of the vehicle at the time of the accident.

University of Oregon women’s basketball coach Paul Westhead will not have his contract extended beyond the end of this season, the school announced today.

“I am going to complete my contract with the University of Oregon,” Westhead said Tuesday, as the Ducks prepare for this week’s Pac-12 Conference tournament in Seattle. “At that time I will pursue other options in the basketball world. I had a good experience here with the Ducks and wish the best for the team going forward.”

Westhead was hired on to coach the Ducks in 2009, leading the team to an overall record of 65-90 and 27-64 in Pac-12 play. Prior to his time at Oregon, Westhead had won championships in both the NBA and WNBA as a head coach, the only coach to do so.

“We want to thank Paul for his service at the University of Oregon.” said Director of Athletics Rob Mullens. “He is an iconic figure in basketball and we wish him and Cassie well in the future.”

Ducks Heat Up Versus Arizona State, Win 85-78

In an early week matchup, the Oregon Ducks kept their NCAA Tournament hopes alive at home by defeating the Arizona State Sun Devils by a score of 85-78. Following another impressive double-double performance by Ducks forward Mike Moser (22 PTS, 17 REB, 9-11 FTM-A), the Ducks gained the lead right out of the gate and kept it until the final buzzer rang.

“This is our most complete game,” said Moser post-game. When asked what he thought about his performance as well as the team’s performance has picked up over the past few games, Moser said it was due to an increased intensity from the team.

The Sun Devil’s All-American candidate Jahii Carson (28 PTS, 10-19 FGM-A, 4-5 3PM-A) had an impressive performance for the Sun Devils against Oregon, but with a lack of a supporting cast, his efforts were little to no avail.

Oregon got off to as good of a start they could ask for against Arizona State by going on a 15-0 run to start the game, thanks to the hot-hand of Damyean Dotson (15 PTS, 6-11 FGM-A, 3-4 3PM-A) on offense and Waverly Austin (5 PTS, 10 REB, 5 BLK) on defense. The Sun Devils, however, answered back with an 11-0 run of their own to make it a close game once again.

“He was the difference in the game,” said head coach Dana Altman after the game about Austin’s performance.

Arizona State was within a basket of tying the game just over the halfway mark versus Oregon. However, the Ducks, with the help of an energetic Matthew Knight Arena and shots outside the arc from Jason Calliste (16 PTS, 4-7 FGM-A, 6-6 FTM-A) and paint play from forwards Ben Carter and Elgin Cook, extended the lead right before halftime, as the Ducks led 33-25.

When asked about the crowd post-game, Dotson said “It was the best one in a long time.”

Thanks to Moser and Joseph Young (13 PTS, 4 AST, 4-4 FTM-A), the second half turned into the first half for the Ducks. While Arizona State was within two baskets of the lead a few times in the half, the Ducks prevented them from getting any closer, and kept them at arm’s length the rest of the way.

Oregon’s last game of the regular season, Senior Night, will be this Saturday against the third-ranked Arizona. A win against the Wildcats will surely remove the Ducks from the bubble and put them into the NCAA Tourney, but a loss will not harm them as much if they win a few games in the PAC-12 tournament next weekend in Las Vegas.

Chambers Communications, parent company of KEZI, has announced Wednesday it has sold KEZI and sister stations KDRV of Medford and KDKF of Klamath Falls to Heartland Media, LLC.

The three ABC affiliates will bring to four the number of television stations owned by Heartland, with the first being WKTV, an NBC affiliate in Utica, New York.

“We are excited about the opportunity to continue the excellent television services that have long been provided by the Chambers family in these markets,” said Bob Prather, President and CEO of Heartland.

Prather most recently served as President and COO for Gray Television, Inc. While leading Gray Television, Prather built a 41-station group, with the largest station being in Knoxville, Tenn., which is the nation’s 51st largest media market.

“We believe Heartland sees the value in our broadcasting strategy and our excellent employees,” said Scott Chambers, CEO of Chambers Communications Corp. “Heartland is particularly well suited to build on the strengths that these stations have had in the local community for the past several decades.”

According to a post on the Facebook page of KEZI news anchor Matt Templeman, he met with Prather Wednesday and said he felt good about what Heartland Media wants to do with KEZI, adding his job and those of his colleagues are safe.
