Oregon Ducks Win Close One Over Utah, 1-0

It took until the bottom of the eighth inning for March Madness to ensue at PK Park with the Oregon Ducks being the benefactor, leading to a 1-0 win over the Utah Utes. Oregon scored on a wild pitch by Utah pitcher Mitch Watrous with two outs in the inning, which brought in pinch runner Nick Catalano from second base.

Both pitchers had great outings for both of their respective teams, each going eight full innings. Watrous gave up four hits, one earned run, one walk, and struck out nine batters for the Utes while Tommy Thorpe only gave up three hits and struck out five batters for the Ducks.

Thorpe had a no-hitter going until the top of the fifth inning when Wyler Smith of Utah pulled off a successful bunt that trickled down the third base line.

Following a single into left field, Shaun Chase was subbed out for pinch runner Catalano. During the next at-bat, Catalano preceded to steal second. After an Aaron Payne strikeout, Watrous threw a wild pitch during Austin Grebeck’s at-bat, leading to Catalano scoring from second.

When asked after the game if he would have been able to make it home from second, Chase with a laugh said no.

It was deja-vu for Catalano as he won the season opener against Hawaii this year in the bottom of the ninth by scoring on a wild pitch from second base.

Oregon will return to PK Park to face Utah tomorrow at 2 p.m. once again.

Oregon Ducks Womens Lacrosse Thumps Presbyterian 23-3

Courtney Valdez had a career day for Oregon, scoring five goals and assisted on a goal, as the Oregon women’s lacrosse team dominated Presbyterian, 23-3, Saturday afternoon at Papé field to close out its three-game homestand. The Ducks had 10 difference players contribute on the offensive end while six players had multiple goals.

Carly O’Connell scored four times for UO (4-3, 1-0 MPSF) while Shannon Propst and Devon Frazer added three goals each while Casey Brogan and Holly Johnson chipped in with two goals apiece.

“We struggled in the second half before, so a lot of the time at half we talked about keeping ourselves and momentum going in the second half and I was pleased with that,” head coach Jen Beck said. “Even when we rotated people in, they stepped up and kept the level high. I was pleased how they held each other accountable and made the play when they needed to.”

Senior Erika McCool recorded her first collegiate goal at the 17:04 mark in the first half and was congratulated first by her goalie, Caroline Federighi, who came charging in from the other end of the field.

Devon Frazer broke the single-game record for the fastest goal scored – 12 seconds – when she won the draw control and jolted down the field to score Oregon’s 11th goal of the day. Frazer beat out the previous mark set by Valdez, 13 seconds, against Robert Morris this year.

The Ducks’ 54 shots today against Presbyterian (3-4) was also the most by Oregon since the Ducks put up 47 against St. Bonaventure in February of 2010.

Oregon opened up the game with an 8-0 run capped off by Valdez – who scored at the 16:16 mark – before Brianne Ward of Presbyterian found the back of the net with 15:26 left to play in the first half. Valdez responded with a goal 50 seconds later for UO before Jess Goergen gave PC its second goal of the day. Valdez again answered for the Oregon, this time at the 11:58 mark to put the Ducks up 10-2.

The Blue Hose scored their last and final goal with 5:12 left in the first half thanks to Goergen again, this time from Catherine Ellis, as Oregon took a 14-3 lead into the break.

The second half was all Oregon thanks to Federighi, Jenna Morris and Becca Katzen who combined to blank Presbyterian. The Ducks finished out the game with a 9-0 run that ended on a goal from Rachel Steinberg with 12 seconds remaining.

“It’s a great confidence booster,” Beck said when asked about how important the win was before heading out to Ohio.

“We’ll savor this tonight, but we’ll definitely get refocused for Ohio State tomorrow. We leave first thing Monday morning so we’ll use our facilities to watch game film and get ourselves prepped.”

The Ducks now hit the road for a four-game road swing starting Monday. Oregon first heads to Ohio for a pair of matches against Ohio State, on March 26, at 1 p.m. (PT) and then faces Cincinnati, on March 30, at 9 a.m. (PT).

Oregon Ducks Take Their Second From Utah, Win 4-1

Four Oregon Ducks pitchers combined to hold Utah without an earned run for the second straight day to lead the Ducks to a 4-1 win over the Utes at PK Park in a Pac-12 Conference game on Saturday.

Freshman Matt Krook picked up his second straight win allowing just one unearned run, while striking out six in five innings. Utah scored a run in the first inning after being shut out on Friday. T.J. Bennett scored the run on a mental error by the Ducks in the first inning on the same play where Oregon committed a throwing error.

Bennett scored all the way from first when shortstop Mark Karaviotis threw the ball away trying to get Wyler Smith at first on an infield hit. Bennett advanced to third on the throw and then scored with the Ducks failed to cover home plate.

Oregon took the lead in the bottom half of the inning. Aaron Payne doubled to lead off the inning and scored on a triple by Tyler Baumgartner. Mitchell Tolman drove in Baumgartner with a sacrifice fly to left field to give Oregon the lead for good.

The Ducks (16-5, 4-1 Pac-12) added two more runs in the seventh. J.B. Bryant started the rally with a single and moved to third on a Jack Kruger ground rule double. Mark Karaviotis gave UO a 3-1 lead with a RBI ground out and Aaron Payne drove in Kruger with a base hit.

Oregon’s bullpen locked Utah (9-12, 0-5 Pac-12) down over the last four innings. Trent Paddon, Garrett Cleavinger and Jake Reed combined to hold the Utes without a hit, while Paddon fanned three. Reed picked up his fifth save and his second in as many days.

Payne led the Ducks going 3-for-4 with a RBI and a run scored.

Oregon and Utah wrap up the three-game series Sunday at 11 a.m. Jeff Gold will take the mound with Oregon looking for the sweep.

Oregon Ducks Need Pinch-Hit Homer To Defeat Utah 3-1

$

A home run by Shaun Chase lifted the Oregon Ducks to a series sweep over Utah on Sunday, and lifted the spirits of family a thousand miles away who dodged tragedy 10 days earlier.

Chase, a junior catcher from Phoenix, hit a pinch-hit, two-run homer to break a one-all tie and help the UO baseball team to a 3-1 victory over the Utes in PK Park. Watching online from Arizona, as always, was Chase’s father, Russ, who suffered a heart attack on March 13.

Convinced by his family to stay with the Ducks in the wake of the incident, Chase hit an eighth-inning single Friday against the Utes and was replaced by pinch-runner Nick Catalano, who scored the winning run. On Sunday, Chase pinch hit two batters after A.J. Balta’s game-tying double in the seventh, and rocketed a one-out, two-strike fastball over the left-field fence that scored Balta from third.

“I was just trying to battle,” Chase said. “I knew I had to get it out of the infield just to score that run, whether it be in the air, up the middle — I had to do something. I couldn’t strike out there.

“They threw me a fastball up in the zone, and I just put a short, hard swing on it. And it happened to go out.”

Chase’s dramatics made a winner of UO starter Jeff Gold for the sixth time in six starts this year, and gave the No. 12 Ducks (17-5, 5-1 Pac-12) their third series sweep of the season. Gold allowed two hits and an unearned run over eight innings, taking pressure off a bullpen that will be tested over a stretch of seven games in nine days that begins Tuesday at San Francisco.

Russ Chase, 56, was working out at a gym when he suffered the heart attack. Shaun Case was told his father’s heart stopped for 16 minutes, but that CPR was administered quickly and concerns about brain damage were alleviated.

Not wanting to worry her son, Dawn Chase didn’t tell Shaun about the heart attack until two days later; Shaun had two hits in Oregon’s March 14 loss to USC, while, unbeknownst to him, his father was in a medically induced coma. One of the hits was a double, and those at Russ’ bedside said he briefly opened his eyes upon hearing the play on the radio broadcast streaming online.

Russ underwent a procedure Monday to insert a defibrillator, and Shaun finally got a chance to talk with his dad over the phone Wednesday.

“He’s always on my mind,” Chase said. “I try and stay in contact with my parents as much as I can, just knowing that anything can happen at any moment. It’s really nerve-racking, especially knowing I’m this far away.”

Chase experienced a different sort of nerves Sunday, summoned from the bench with a chance to give the Ducks their first lead of the game. He popped up a pitch behind home plate that just cleared the netting to reach the stands, before smacking the homer to left.

“He played well on Friday, and then obviously the big hit today,” UO coach George Horton. “It’s a great story.”

Oregon’s seventh-inning rally began with Kyle Garlick’s leadoff single. Balta worked a full count, and thus Garlick broke with the pitch and came all the way around to score on Balta’s double. Balta went to third on a groundball out by J.B. Bryant, and Chase came through with the go-ahead homer.

Gold was at 75 pitches by that point, and Horton was leaning toward pulling him; a week earlier, Gold cruised through six innings against USC before allowing four hits and two runs in the seventh. But Horton took a straw poll of the UO infield, which sided with Gold’s request to work the eighth inning against the Utes.

Gold allowed a baserunner but then induced a high chopper to third baseman Kevin Minjares for Gold’s third straight inning-ending double play.

That allowed Gold to match his previous career-long outing. He overcame the unearned run in the first and three hit batters to improve to 6-0.

“It always bothers me giving up runs, but it happens,” said Gold, who lowered his ERA to 2.04. “You’ve just got to keep staying with the plan, which is executing pitches.”

Darrell Hunter pitched the ninth for his first save, as the Ducks gave Jake Reed a break after finishing games Friday and Saturday.

After the game, Horton confirmed that Scott Heineman, Oregon’s leadoff hitter and third baseman to open the season, is scheduled for season-ending shoulder surgery. Limited to eight games by the labrum injury this spring, Heineman is a candidate to be granted a medical hardship by the NCAA, and thus retain his eligibility as a junior in 2015.

Tommy Thorpe Named PAC-12 Pitcher of the Week

Tommy Thorpe has been named the Pac-12 Pitcher of the Week after helping Oregon to a series sweep of Utah last weekend.

Thorpe, a Vancouver, Wash., native propelled Oregon to a series-opening 1-0 win over the Utes on Friday night, allowing just three hits in eight innings to match a career-high while striking out five. The junior didn’t allow a baserunner until the fifth inning and didn’t give up an outfield hit until the seventh inning. With the win, the Ducks’ left-hander moved to 3-2 with a 2.23 ERA on the season.

This marks Thorpe’s first-career Pac-12 Pitcher of the Week nod and the eighth pitcher honoree overall for the Ducks. Oregon returns to action with games at San Francisco on Tuesday and Wednesday and then gets back to conference play with a three-game series at Stanford starting on Friday.

Oregon Ducks Lose To Rival In WNIT 93-85

The Oregon Ducks women basketball season and head coach Paul Westhead’s time at Oregon both ended Monday night when the Ducks lost at home to their rival the Washington Huskies in the WNIT by a score of 93-85. The Ducks finished with a record of 16-16 in Westhead’s final season as it was announced earlier this month that the University of Oregon would not be renewing his contract as head coach.

Jillian Alleyne, the future of the Ducks program, scored 17 points and grabbed 25 rebounds. Alleyne reached 500 rebounds on the season during the game, making her only the sixth person ever to achieve that mark in NCAA history. Alleyne also set a PAC-12 record Monday with the her 29th double-double of the season.

“I don’t really have words for it, except that it has been literally amazing from start to finish,” Alleyne said of her sophomore campaign. “I saw our team take a huge step from where we were last year. So if I could put this season in one word, it would absolutely be unbelievable.”

Losing in the same fashion as the mens team against Wisconsin on Saturday, the womens team led the Huskies by 12 at halftime before Washington went hot in the second half and the Ducks went cold.

“We just didn’t make shots,” said Westhead, who finished 66-92 in five seasons with the program. Westhead, known as the Guru of Go, led Oregon to school and conference records with 93.2 points and 51.0 rebounds per game this season.
