Oregon Ducks Basketball Announces Full 2013-14 Schedule

The Oregon Ducks basketball have announced their full 2013-2014 schedule. Their PAC-12 schedule was released a couple of weeks ago but the Ducks have been ironing out their non-conference schedule until now.

The biggest game of the non-conference season happens to be their first of the season. Oregon will play against Georgetown on the base of Camp Humphreys in South Korea as part of the Armed Forces Classic. Georgetown had a second seed in last year’s NCAA Tournament but were eliminated in the first round thanks to a major upset win by Florida Gulf Coast.

The Ducks will also have two other significant road games that involve a trip to Oxford, MS to take on Ole Miss for the first time in program history and a trip up to Portland to take on Illinois at the Rose Garden (I know it’s Moda Center but I’ll never call it that like I’ll never stop calling the tallest building in Chicago the Sears Tower).

Before the game against Georgetown that officially starts the regular season for Oregon, the Ducks will play host to literal neighbors Northwest Christian University in an exhibition game at Matt Knight Arena that will be televised on the Pac-12 Network. The NCU recently appointed former Oregon Duck player Luke Jackson to the position of head coach for the men’s basketball team.

Our friends at Lambeth Field in Virginia have kindly shared their preview of this Saturday’s game between the Ducks and the Virginia Cavaliers.

The gist of it is, the Ducks are gonna open up a can of you-know-what. Of course, we know that already. I have a feeling the Ducks are going to make a dominant showing on the East Coast and hopefully counter the East Coast bias many believe exist against the Pac-12. My prediction: 62-13 Ducks.

Lane Today’s Sean Larson will have his full preview of the Oregon-Virginia matchup on Thursday.

LT College Football Pick Em: Week 2

Suffice it to say, none of our staff members saw Eastern Washington beating Oregon State. After a mildly wild week in college football pick em (just wait until November when stuff starts hitting the fan), sports writer Jack has jumped out into an early lead with five big ones. Sean and Scott both came in second place and thus each earn two points toward the standings (three points for second, one point for third, (3+1)/2=2). This week looks to be a very tight week with most Pac-12 teams playing either FCS teams or lower-level FBS teams so if someone manages to correctly predict an upset it will more than likely automatically win them the week.

Oregon Football Preview: Week 2 at Virginia

$
0
0

Last week against Nicholls State, Marcus Mariota threw for 234 yards while rushing for 113 yards. (Emma Leighty/Lane Today)

With their opening week tuneup game against Nichols State now in the rear view mirror, the No. 2 Oregon Ducks shift their focus to the Virginia Cavaliers. The 2,808-mile journey to Charlottesville is Oregon’s furthest trip to the East Coast since 1977 when the Ducks faced Georgia in Rich Brooks’ head coaching debut. The matchup also marks the first time the two schools have ever faced each other. Virginia will travel to Autzen Stadium in 2016 to complete the home-and-home series between the schools. The Ducks are the heavy favorites, but don’t expect it to be an FCS-sized blowout like last weekend. So what will this weekend’s game look like exactly?

Offense

Through the air, Oregon has the advantage. In last week’s 19-16 win over BYU, Virginia quarterback David Watford completed 18 of 32 passes for 114 yards with one touchdown and one interception. While the performance was nothing that stood out, it got the job done for Virginia. For the Ducks, Marcus Mariota completed 12 of 21 passes for 234 yards, averaging over 11 yards per pass in an efficient opening week performance. The two quarterbacks are coming off of very different seasons. Last year, Mariota generated plenty of Heisman hype in his first year as a starter, while Watford was asked to redshirt after Virginia landed Alabama transfer Phillip Sims. Mariota has shown few signs of weakness while starting for Oregon, and Saturday’s game should be no different.

On the ground, the matchup is anything but even. Last week, the Ducks saw three players rush gain over 100 rushing yards, the first time in school history Oregon has achieved such a feat. De’Anthony Thomas led the way with 128 yards on a career-high 18 carries. After the departure of LaMichael James and Kenjon Barner in the last two seasons, it finally seems as if Thomas has earned the top spot among running backs in the depth chart. Byron Marshall ran for 124 yards, while Marcus Mariota added another 113 yards. As a team, the Ducks rushed for 500 yards against Nicholls State. Meanwhile, the Cavaliers rushed for 109 yards against BYU. Kevin Parks handled most of the workload for Virginia, rushing for 65 yards on 20 carries, including a 13-yard go-ahead touchdown run with less than three minutes remaining in last week’s win. While Virginia is outmatched on the ground as well, Parks showed he knows how to make the big plays when it matters most.

Defense

Oregon’s Terrence Mitchell, pictured right, will look to clean up his hits against Virginia. Mitchell was ejected from Saturday’s game against Nicholls State after this hit in which he led with his head. (Emma Leighty/Lane Today)

Last week, both defenses showed up to play. The Ducks didn’t allow a touchdown against Nicholls State, which initially seems unimpressive until you account for truly how much “garbage time” was in the game after Oregon took control from the start. One thing that was surprising from the Ducks was the fact that they weren’t able to force any turnovers. Last year, the Ducks forced 26 interceptions and 17 fumbles. Nicholls State managed to survive last week’s blowout without committing a turnover, a small silver lining for the Colonels. Oregon’s rush defense was particularly impressive, holding the Colonels to just 87 yards on the ground. Meanwhile, BYU’s Jamaal Williams ran all over Virginia’s defense for 144 yards on 33 carries in a workhorse-type effort. Unlike Oregon, the Cavaliers’ defense did come up with a major interception from Anthony Harris off a tipped pass, setting up Parks’ game-winning touchdown the very next play. The Ducks should have no trouble on the ground against Virginia’s rush defense which was worn down by Williams’ 33 touches.

Prediction

While this game won’t be as effortless for the Ducks as last week’s win, it won’t be surprising if Oregon is able to put away the game by some point in the second quarter. Virginia is no FCS pushover, but they simply don’t possess the talent that the Ducks have from top to bottom. The matchup will be a good test for both teams. For Oregon, it will be an opportunity to see how the team responds after a rare cross-country flight. For Virginia, it will be a test to see how long they can hold off a national championship caliber program. Both teams should be able to walk away from this game with something learned. In the end, the Ducks will come out on top 49-10.

The Oregon Ducks extended their road winning streak to 16 games on Saturday during a 59-10 rout over the Virginia Cavaliers in Charlottesville. The streak is currently the longest in college football. It was another big day for the Ducks on the ground as they ran for 350 yards, including 100-plus yard performances from quarterback Marcus Mariota and running back De’Anthony Thomas. Mariota also completed 14 of 28 passes for 199 yards and two touchdowns.

Less than two minutes into the game, Mariota found a wide open path to the end zone on third-and-5, taking it 71 yards for the touchdown. Mariota would finish with 122 rushing yards on just four carries, averaging over 30 yards per run. It marked the second straight game to open the season that Mariota ran for over 100 yards.

After a three-and-out by Virginia, wide receiver Josh Huff came up with a blocked punt, running around the coverage while using his speed to reach Cavaliers punter Alec Vozenilek, giving the Ducks possession on the Virginia 14-yard line. A 14-yard reception by Daryle Hawkins set up the 1-yard run by Thomas for the touchdown.

Oregon’s Terrence Mitchell, who was ejected from last weekend’s season opener against Nicholls State for leading with his head during a hit, came up with the first of three interceptions for the Ducks to set up a 40-yard touchdown run by Thomas on the ensuing play, giving Oregon a 21-0 lead just over 10 minutes into the game. Thomas had another big day on the ground with 124 yards on 11 carries, averaging over 11 yards per carry.

Virginia answered back with a big touchdown run of their own as Kevin Shepherd ran 45 yards to give the Cavaliers their first points of the day. Shepherd finished the day with 46 yards on 4 carries.

The Ducks continued to show that time of possession is nothing but a number as Mariota found receiver Bralon Addison for a 30-yard touchdown reception as part of a 3 play, 80 yard drive which took all of 41 seconds to give the Ducks a 28-7 lead. Addison caught three passes for 54 yards.

Oregon nearly added another touchdown with the clock running low before the half, but Byron Marshall was stopped on 4th down just a yard shy from the end zone. The Ducks would head into the locker room with a 28-10 lead after a 37-yard field goal by Virginia’s Ian Frye.

The second half was all Oregon, as the Ducks scored 31 unanswered points. In one of the more explosive plays of the game, Oregon’s Dior Mathis intercepted a pass in the end zone, returning it 97 yards to the Virginia 3-yard line. The interception set the stage for the heavily anticipated debut of true freshman Thomas Tyner, a local 5-star recruit from Beaverton, Oregon. On Tyner’s first career carry, the freshman found the end zone, extending Oregon’s lead to 41. On the very next drive, Tyner broke free for a 31-yard touchdown to cap off another offensive rout by the Ducks. In his brief appearance, Tyner rushed for 51 yards on 4 carries in a debut that had the freshman trending on Twitter across the nation.

However, the win was far from perfect. Oregon committed 11 penalties for 119 yards, mistakes that could come with major consequences as the season progresses. Oregon also converted on 3rd down just three of 10 times.

The Ducks now travel home to prepare to take on the Tennessee Volunteers at Autzen Stadium next weekend. The game has been circled on the calendars of both teams ever since the Ducks dominated the Volunteers back in 2010 during a 48-13 win. The game featured a lengthy delay due to lightning, which seemed to be exactly what the Ducks needed as they returned to score 42 unanswered points. The matchup is the final non-conference game of the year for Oregon before they face the California Golden Bears at Autzen Stadium on September 28. Kickoff is scheduled for 12:30 p.m. and will be televised on ABC.

Four Challenge Merkley’s U.S. Senate Seat for 2014 Election

Jeff Merkley, Democrat U.S. Senator since 2008, has some competition in the 2014 U.S. Senate elections. Currently, four citizens have announced their intent to strive towards the chance to serve as one of Oregon’s Senators in Washington, D.C.

While no newcomer to political races, Republican Mark Callahan believes he has an excellent shot of beating Merkley to become an Oregon Senator. Callahan says he knows from experience how Merkley operates and treats his constituents. His actions have motivated Callahan to strive to represent all his constituents, not simply the ones in the same political party.

Mark Callahan
Photo: Elizabeth Cully Prociw

Callahan became involved in politics after becoming frustrated with the direction current politicians were taking the country. Callahan believes the country is headed towards trouble because it has fallen away from the guidelines of the Constitution, coupled with people having the wrong view of the government’s role. “When you know what you work for, you value it better,” he said.

If elected to the Senate, turning the country in a more conservative direction would be one of Callahan’s goals. Others include ending ObamaCare (the Affordable Care Act), making the country fiscally responsible to lower debt, and having a conservative majority in both the House and Senate.

Callahan has never held a political office, but he says running for a variety of positions, testifying before various councils, and working with political groups helped prepare him. In 2000, he received a bachelor of science, Business Administration/Management Information Systems and a Pre-Law minor from Oregon State University. Previously he has run for school board positions, county commissioner, Oregon state senator, and U.S. president in 2012.

Running as a Republican in a mostly Democrat state, Callahan says the key for being successful is a matter of better marketing, not only in Oregon, but on a national level as well. Callahan will be going up against fellow Republican, Jo Rae Perkins. He says he respects her and knows she has her own reasons for running.

Pavel Goberman is the one opposing Democrat running in the race at this time. However, in past state and national elections, he has run as a Republican, Democrat and Libertarian. His track record includes a run for U.S. Senate in 2010 and 2008, Congress in 2011, BOLI Commissioner in 2008, Oregon State Senate, Oregon State Representative, and the Mayor of Beaverton.

Pavel Goberman
Courtesy of Pavel Goberman Facebook page

Although never elected for an office, Goberman says he continues to run for the people and to end the judicial tyranny he sees. He has great hopes of initiating his plan to create millions of jobs, save millions of dollars on health care, reduce the national deficit, and improve traffic systems. “I am not running to occupy space, I am a business man,” said Goberman. The manager of a successful fitness business, Goberman plans to take a similar business approach to Washington DC.

He says he is not concerned with his lack of political experience because he had no experience or schooling as a manager, but was successful as one nevertheless. His guidelines for national and state issues are to do what is best for United States citizens. He says he will strive to promote freedom, strictly follow the Constitution, and stay honest in office.

Goberman plans to fund his campaign from his personal savings, without taking a single donation from other sources. He hopes for the chance to debate other Senate-hopefuls and incumbent Jeff Merkley on public debates provided by nonprofit organizations, such as Oregon Public Broadcasting. He sees this method of campaigning as an alternative to spending large amounts of money, which could be better used elsewhere and to keep alternative interests out of elections. Goberman sees it the duty of the country to provide the chance for open discussion between candidates.

Currently the only nonpartisan candidate running, Karl King (photo unavailable) was motivated to join the Senate race after watching political changes globally and nationally. He remembers hearing of countries around the world stepping up to change circumstances. In the U.S. he was shocked with the attitude and decisions of lawmakers. King decided he could either sit back and be angry like everyone else or say he stood up and tried.

Although he acknowledges going up against a deeply funded, well-known incumbent like Merkley does not have favorable odds, he is satisfied knowing he tried to voice his opinion. In his own campaign, King will take no funds from PACs or more than 100 dollars from a single individual.

Corporate funding of political campaigns is an issue King would like to work towards ending if elected to office. Strengthening privacy and fixing the budget by cutting government spending is also on his to-do list. Local goals include strengthening forest fire prevention and helping Oregonians utilize their public lands. King says it the desire of his constituents, not his personal feelings, which will dictate his decisions with key issues. He also sees himself as someone who will stay reasonable in office. “Think of how someone using common sense would vote, and that is what I will do,” said King.

King has no previous political experience, but says experience is part of the problem in government today. He says politicians get stuck in the game of politics and lose sight of what is important. He believes he can offer a fresh outlook to the Senate.

Jo Rae Perkins, Republican, has never held political office before. But that does not stop the recent Oregon State University political science graduate from believing she has what it takes to unseat Merkley. Despite Merkley having over $1.8 million in his campaign war chest, she is not intimidated, saying he started with zero dollars too, and that money has been coming into her campaign.

Jo Rae Perkins

Perkins says she is running for the Senate because she has watched the freedoms and rights of the American people being eroded away. She added the Founding Fathers were concerned about an expanding government, and feels states should have more control of the laws within their states than the federal government does. Perkins feels that voters need to be educated about candidates and to be open to change. “For people who are truly tired of the same old stuff, stop reelecting the same people,” she said.

If elected, Perkins intends to keep a three-part promise regarding bills. She plans to read every bill before voting, keep bills free of pork spending and unrelated projects, and will not vote on a bill that violates her social and fiscal conservative values. Perkins would also like to fix what she sees as broken in the government, by getting rid of the IRS, reining in government spending, and making federal agencies that overlap more efficient and effective. Although not a fan of Super PACs, she understands the high likelihood that they will campaign on her behalf.

Although she has never held political office, Perkins was the vice chair of the Linn County Republican Central Committee from November 2008 to January 2009, when she took over as chair. She was elected to the same position in 2010, which she held until November 2012. However, she told Lane Today she knew in 2009 she would run for U.S. Senate.

Lane Today contacted Oregon GOP chair Art Robinson to see if the party planned to put any other candidates on the 2014 Senate ballot, but was unable to reach him. The deadline for entering the race is December 9, 2013.

Incumbent Merkley has held his Senate seat for one term, after serving as a Oregon State Representative in 1998, Democratic Leader in 2003, and Speaker in 2007. According to the Federal Election Commission Merkley has $1, 859,653 in total receipts, $596,006 in total disbursements, and $1,808,061 cash in hand.

Ducks Women’s Soccer Fights For A Win But Comes Up Short Against Anteaters

This afternoon, University of Oregon challenged UC Irvine at their very own Papé Field, but lost 2-1 in an intensely heated match. The Anteaters started off strong, as they scored the first goal of the game at 2 minutes. Jenna Pellegrino’s header off of Zoya Farzaneh’s pass was the play that led to UC Irvine claiming the upper hand.

Photo: Emma Leighty

Photo: Emma Leighty

In all their attempts to tie the game, the Ducks did not find themselves with any goals in the first half, although Brooke Strawn did head the ball into the net for a goal, but unfortunately was waived offside and the point did not count. While the Ducks seemed to find it difficult to put the ball in the net, in the 75th minute, Zoya Farzaneh managed to score, resulting in a 2-0 lead.

The Ducks went into the second half, still with no goals to match and it seemed with every one of their attempts, someone from UC Irvine got in their way. Bri Pugh had many attempts and close goals, but none seemed to be able to get past the Anteaters. But finally, in the 88th minute, Pugh helped the ball successfully find the back of that net, bringing the score to a tight 2-1.

The last minutes were intense for everyone as the Ducks battled to tie up the match, and the Anteaters defended every goal attempt. With 9 seconds left in the second half, University of Oregon just barely missed the net, and UC Irvine was able to clinch the win at the end of a very long, hard fought game.

Stay tuned for your next chance to watch the Ducks women’s soccer team play, as Oregon will be back on the field Thursday hosting the BYU Cougars.
