Ducks Volleyball Uses Season High Hitting Percentage to Sweep Seattle University

Oregon middle blocker Nicky Kevorken prepares for an attack against Seattle University on Tuesday night at Matthew Knight Arena (Sean Larson/Lane Today)

Oregon middle blocker Nicky Kevorken prepares for an attack against Seattle University on Tuesday night at Matthew Knight Arena (Sean Larson/Lane Today)

The Oregon Ducks took care of business on Tuesday night, sweeping Seattle University in three straight sets, 25-19, 25-12, 25-16 at Matthew Knight Arena. Middle blocker Ariana Williams led the Ducks offense with a career high hitting percentage of .733. Williams finished the night with 11 kills on 14 attempts. Liz Brenner led Oregon with 14 kills.

The match got off to an even start, but the Ducks found their rhythm with a 12-3 run to jump out to a 17-8 lead. Oregon then committed six of their 11 errors to allow the Redhawks to get back into the set, cutting the Ducks’ lead to four. Oregon was able to hold off Seattle’s late run to take the first set 25-19. Williams racked up seven of her 11 kills just in the first set.

“Ari’s just plain good,” said Oregon head coach Jim Moore. “I’ve been encouraged about Ari for a while, I know she’s good.”

Much like the opening set, the Ducks used a big offensive run to take control of the second set. After two aces from Shellsy Ashen forced Seattle to call a timeout, the Ducks continued to roll as part of a 15-3 run to take control of the set. Seattle wouldn’t come within any closer than nine points for the remainder of the set. The Ducks were able to cruise to a 25-12 set win to put Seattle on the ropes heading into the break.

During the previous homestand, the Ducks had looked flat often in the middle set. In Tuesday night’s win, Oregon showed much more of a seamless performance with a rhythm all the way through.

“We did a really good job in the second set of jumping all over them and the missed serves allowed it to not be 25-9,” said Moore. “It’s a work in progress. It’s just barely the start of the third week.”

Oregon continued to roll in the third set, as they were able to pull away from Seattle towards the end. The set opened evenly as the Redhawks

were within three points with the score at 15-12, but Oregon used a 7-3 run to pull away as they went on to win the set by a final score of 25-16 to complete the three set sweep.

The Ducks hit .374 as a team, a season high, while the Redhawks struggled with a hitting percentage of .088, which Williams believed was the result of good blocking and defense during practice.

“We worked a lot on blocking and helping to block the middle and deflecting balls,” said Williams. “Focusing not so much on blocking the ball, but focusing on slowing it down for our defense or leaving good holes for our defense.”

The Ducks will now travel to Fresno, California for the Fresno State Classic. They’ll face Cal State Bakersfield on Friday at 7:30 pm, Belmont at 10:00 am on Saturday, and Fresno State on Saturday night at 7:30 pm. Oregon will then have 11 days off before beginning Pac-12 play on September 25 in Corvallis when they take on Oregon State.

“That was designed that way on purpose,” said Moore. “We definitely have to be smart. It’s a lot of matches crammed together here in the first three weeks. We have a whole week to work on the things we need to work on.”

Following the tournament, the Ducks will return to Eugene to take the Washington Huskies on September 27. The game will be the first athletic event at Matthew Knight Arena of the new fall term, which has traditionally drawn big crowds, especially from the student body, leading to what could be a massive home court advantage for the Ducks.

Oregon Ducks Beat SEC’s Tennessee Volunteers 59-14

For those of you busy watching the Alabama vs. Texas A&M game, there was an SEC team losing its marbles on the West Coast. The Oregon Duck, the nation’s second-ranked football team, showed that they can hang with the SEC by beating the Tennessee Volunteers at Autzen by a score of 59-14. The Vols led early, but the Ducks turned on the afterburners and never looked back on their SEC opponent.

The star of the game was Oregon quarterback Marcus Mariota. At the conclusion of the game, Mariota went 23-33 for 456 passing yards (a career-best mark), 27 rushing yards, and 5 total touchdowns. Mariota was very coy when asked post-game about his name being in the Heisman hunt stating that he and the team don’t pay attention to individual awards and approach games with a team mindset one week at a time.

The breakout athlete of the game was Oregon true freshman tight end Johnny Mundt who ended the game with 5 receptions for 121 yards and 2 touchdowns. Mundt was one of two receivers (Josh Huff) who eclipsed the 100 receiving yard mark.

DeAnthony Thomas had a game-high 86 rushing yards off of 13 carries with the longest rush being a 28-yard touchdown. In his home debut, Thomas Tyner ended the game with 8 carries, 29 rushing yards, and 1 touchdown in the 3rd quarter.

Oregon had a couple of sloppy drives to start off the game, including a DeAnthony Thomas 4th down red zone touchdown that was called back due to offensive pass interference. On the next play, kicker Alejandro Maldonado missed a 37-yard field goal attempt by kicking it wide right of the posts.

Tennessee surprised everyone by being the first team to put points on the board. After a 51-yard pass completed to wide receiver Josh Smith, quarterback Justin Worley threw a 4-yard touchdown pass to Jason Croom into the left side of the end zone.

From then on, the game was completely in Oregon’s hands. After a successful 38-yard field goal by Matt Wogan, Mariota completed a 16-yard touchdown pass to Oregon’s version of Johnny Football, Johnny Mundt, which was the first for the true freshman tight end who started in place of ill Colt Lyerla.

Mundt said after the game that Lyerla has visited the doctors a few times this past week but has no idea what his specific ailment is. When asked about Lyerla post-game, Helfrich said he didn’t play due to “circumstances” and he can’t go into detail any further because “circumstances is one word.”

That touchdown by Mariota to Mundt started a streak of five straight scoring drives for Oregon, the last of which led to the end of the first half, which all lasted under two minutes and ended in a touchdown for the Ducks.

At the end of the first half, Mariota had 362 total yards to go along with four touchdowns. Early in the first half, Mariota joined an elusive club of Oregon quarterbacks when he surpassed 1,000 rushing yards as a QB. Later in the second half, Mariota surpassed the 400 passing yard mark which was last done by an Oregon quarterback back in 2005 courtesy of Kellen Clemens.

The Ducks started the second half scoring in the same way they did the first half with another Johnny Football (Mundt) touchdown catch from Mariota. At the conclusion of Mariota’s time in the game, the quarterback accumulated a total of 456 passing yards, 27 rushing yards, and 5 total touchdowns.

Thomas Tyner, an Aloha,OR native, got his first career touchdown in Autzen for the Ducks courtesy of a 2-yard rush. Toward the end of the third, Oregon brought in their backups including both Jeff Lockie and Jake Rodriguez at quarterback in place of Mariota.

Oregon will get a bye week next week and return to action at home against California two weeks from now. Tennessee will not have a fun time in the next couple of weeks with this game against Oregon starting a stretch of games where the Volunteers will face five teams in the Top 20 (Oregon, Florida, Georgia, South Carolina, Alabama) in their next six games.
