The FBI is offering a reward of up to $10,000 for information leading to the identification, arrest and conviction of the person or people responsible for two improvised explosive devices (IEDs) left at a Coos Bay park and at the Prayer Chapel in Coos Bay, Oregon. The FBI, the Coos Bay Police Department (CBPD), and Oregon State Police (OSP) are working jointly to determine who created and placed the IEDs at these locations. The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) and the U.S. Postal Inspection Service are also providing assistance.

Late in the evening of August 22, 2013, an IED detonated at the base of the Mingus Park Vietnam War Memorial. On September 3, 2013, someone placed another IED inside the Prayer Chapel at Second Street and Commercial Avenue in Coos Bay. The Coos Bay Fire Department and OSP Hazardous Device Technicians were able to disrupt that explosive before it detonated. At this time, it is not known if the same person or group is responsible for both IEDs.

The investigation into both incidents is continuing to be addressed by federal, state, and local personnel. At the time of arrest, the United States Attorney’s Office for the District of Oregon and the District Attorney’s Office for Coos County will work together to determine which court system is the most appropriate forum for prosecution based on the facts of the case, the motive involved, and other factors.

The FBI’s participation in this case stems from the Church Arson Prevention Act (CAPA), which makes it a violation of federal law to intentionally deface, damage, or destroy any religious real property because of the religious character of that property (or to attempt to do so). The maximum penalty for violation of the CAPA is 20 years in prison.

The Coos Bay Police Department has released a sketch of a person believed to have been in the vicinity of the Prayer Chapel shortly before the IED was found there. Witnesses described that person as a white man, approximately 55 years old, 5’6” – 5’7” tall, and about 150 pounds with a shaved head. That sketch is attached.

2:19 a.m. – Chad Ficek, 24, was arrested in the 4300 block of Daisy St. on warrants out of Baker County.

2:45 a.m. – Kacy Foster, 24, was arrested on a charge of DUII at S. 14^th and S. A Streets.

5:17 a.m. – Ligaya Harlan, 32, was arrested at Wal-Mart in the 2600 block of Olympic St. on a warrant for possession of methamphetamine.

8:10 a.m. – A dead raccoon was reported in the parking lot of the old Tom’s Tapper Tavern building in the 4000 block of Franklin Blvd.

8:47 a.m. – A nurse at McKenzie-Willamette Hospital found drug paraphernalia and knives in a patient’s room.

10:38 a.m. – A Rottweiler/Schnauzer mix was seen running in the area of 36^th and Main Streets.

12:28 p.m. – A resident in the 6900 block of Glacier Dr. reported having received a fraudulent check from someone in Virginia who wanted to buy a vehicle her boyfriend was selling on Craigslist.

2:31 p.m. – A green 1995 Ford Explorer was repossessed from an address in the 600 block of 53^rd Pl.

2:50 p.m. – A caller reported a “creepy black Ford Bronco” pulling a utility trailer had been following kids before school near the 900 block of S. 32^nd St.

3:58 p.m. – A resident of the Kings Court Apartments reported a male subject was going door-to-door selling movies and saying he was with Springfield Police Department. Police did not locate him in a subsequent check of the area.

4:17 p.m. – A cell phone was reported stolen at Springfield Spas in the 1100 block of Main St.

4:52 p.m. – A resident in the 1600 block of Rambling Dr. reported a male subject was going door-to-door for a project in which he was trying to meet all the neighbors for a scholarship but was actually selling magazines. He was not able to provide identification to the caller, however.

6:45 p.m. – A hit and run accident occurred near Les Schwab Tires in the 500 block of Harlow Rd.

6:51 p.m. – A male and female were engaged in a dispute along Main St. near S. 43^rd St. The male was throwing clothing and other personal items into the road, and was advised by police.

7:34 p.m. – Wendy Rizueno, 46, was arrested on a charge of DUII at Wal-Mart in the 2600 block of Olympic St.

10:15 p.m. – An intoxicated 17-year-old male attempted to board a bus at LTD’s Springfield Station, but was pulled off the bus due to his having urinated on the lawn.

12:07 a.m. – A resident in the 700 block of 23^rd St. came home to find her television missing. A burglary report was made.

1:37 a.m. – A caller reported an object was thrown at a vehicle near 58^th and F Streets, possibly an apple.

2:26 a.m. – A male subject was observed on video throwing a rock through the window of a business in the 1400 block of Main St. The subject was riding a bicycle and wearing a light blue hat and shirt.

4:05 a.m. – A 35-year-old female subject rode in a taxi to the 4800 block of Glacier Dr., racking up a $40 fare. The subject refused to get out of the taxi or pay the fare. She then hit the driver, and got out and went inside a residence.

9:48 a.m. – A caller reported an intoxicated male subject walking along W. Centennial Blvd. with a beer in his hand, who was barely able to stand up.

11:21 a.m. – A male subject was sleeping under a tan blanket under a tree at Marquis Care Nursing Home in the 1300 block of 1^st St. He was advised of trespass.

11:35 a.m. – Police responded to a report of a female subject beating on a man with her fists and a stick in the area of Mill and W. E Streets.

12:48 p.m. – A wallet was stolen from a vehicle parked in the 400 block of 35^th St.

2:16 p.m. – Colton Lemus, 20, was cited for driving while suspended at 18^th and Main Streets.

3:32 p.m. – Several juveniles in the Brentwood Estates Apartments in the 300 block of 30^th St. had someone in the office call police because they saw a red car leave the complex with a small child inside of it yelling “Help me!”

5:04 p.m. – Melissa Bowen, 33, was arrested on a trespassing charge at Wal-Mart in the 2600 block of Olympic St.

5:07 p.m. – Kristina Powell, 27, was arrested on a theft charge at Fred Meyer in the 600 block of Q St.

5:24 p.m. – An employee of Lucky Lil’s in the 1300 block of Mohawk Blvd. reported a female subject who appeared to be high asked if she could charge her phone there. However, she refused to identify herself, but did leave a few minutes later.

6:48 p.m. – Kelly Larson, 31, was cited for driving while suspended in the 1900 block of Olympic St.

7:32 p.m. A cow was at large in the road in the 7300 block of Thurston Rd.

9:08 p.m. – Jordan Dehaven, 22, was cited for driving while suspended in the 100 block of 35^th St.

10:37 p.m. – Cody Davis, 21, was arrested on a charge of DUII at 14^th and Main Streets.

11:36 p.m. – Michael Clausen, 54, was arrested on a charge of DUII in the 1700 block of Main St.

When it comes to high school football, there are two types of experiences. One experience involves big league high schools that have thousands of students enrolled at the school and many alumni and local supporters that go watch the home games every Friday night.

The stadiums these schools have in their possession are state of the art and have stands that stretch both sides of the field. In some cases, the stadiums look like they belong to colleges that are in Division 2 or the FCS. Massive well-trained cheerleading routines, large student sections, bands that play so loud they can be heard a mile away, and enough people in attendance that warrants at least two to three cop cars in attendance in case of a riot is what you’ll experience at these games.

This is not the experience you’ll encounter if you attend a football game at Creswell, Oregon’s Markley Field.

Creswell represents the second kind of experience you’ll encounter at a high school football game; the same experience spattered across the United States. This experience requires a small town with one high school, a rustic football stadium with a press box straight from a lumberyard, and stands that seem more like Cheers (where everyone knows your name) then a typical crowd at a football game.

Named after a former head football coach from the 60s, Markley Field plays host to the Creswell High School Bulldogs. The field boasts a brand new concessions/merchandise/ticket office building. The building was built over this last summer thanks to funding and volunteer labor by the Creswell football boosters.

When it comes to icons at the game, Cal Taylor fits that bill for Markley Field. In a town where everyone knows your name, Taylor is the most known fan at Creswell games. Taylor has been known as frequent attendant at every single Creswell football game, as well as basketball game, for the past thirty plus years. You’ll notice Taylor in his red Creswell hat, flannel jacket, and now, because of his old age, his cane.

The Bulldogs home of Creswell has a population of five thousand and is located ten miles south of Eugene, OR. Creswell is so small that it does not have a McDonalds or Starbucks in the town, with the closest thing to a major brand being a Bi-Mart. Creswell has one lone exit off of the major interstate I-5 that connects Seattle, WA to Los Angeles, CA.

The city of Creswell’s most famous alumni include current Gonzaga men’s basketball head coach Mark Few and former Oregon Duck and Cleveland Cavalier player Luke Jackson, who is the current men’s basketball coach at nearby Northwest Christian University in Eugene.

In the end, the visiting Blanchet Catholic Cavaliers defeated the Creswell Bulldogs by a score of 54 to 0 but that didn’t deter the Creswell faithful from leaving early. Considering the amount of traffic lights in the town is less than a half dozen, there isn’t much worry of a traffic jam after the game.

A 46-year-old Florence man was transported to RiverBend Hospital in Springfield after he allegedly ran in front of a passing vehicle south of Florence.

Shortly before 9 p.m., an Oregon State Police trooper responded to a report of a pedestrian on the ground in front of a sport utility vehicle near milepost 192 on Highway 101. The trooper arrived about three minutes later and administered medical aid to the pedestrian, Jeffrey G. Miller, 46, of Florence, until medical responders took over.

Initial investigation indicates a 2002 GMC Envoy operated by Nancy E. Pearson, 55, of Florence, had seen Miller in the darkness at the last moment, but could not avoid striking him. Pearson was not injured.

Pearson was not cited and cooperated with the investigation.
