Four More Years? Jay Bozievich Announces Plans to run for Reelection

Jay Bozievich announced Tuesday morning he will be seeking reelection to his position on the Lane County Board of Commissioners, West Lane Position 1.

“It has been an honor to serve my neighbors as a County Commissioner,” Bozievich states. “When I was encouraged to run by concerned neighbors 4 years ago, The Lane County Board of Commissioners had fractured the public trust with backroom deals. I believe that indications of that trust being rebuilt were realized with the passing of the Public Safety Levy in May. I have worked hard to regain that trust.”

In recent months, two large employers, First Call Resolution and Oregon Health Authority, have announced plans to build facilities which will create approximately 700 new permanent jobs in Bozievich’s district.

“Consistent high unemployment deserved more effort from the previous board, which is why I made I made it one of my top priorities at the county,” Bozievich continues. “If people can’t have steady job it makes fully funding essential services, like public safety, very difficult. I will continue to work with our economic development department and other community leaders to find new opportunities for job growth.”

During Bozievich’s tenure as commissioner, the county has also made progress towards revamping public safety, with the voters passing Measure 20-213, ensuring the county maintains a minimum of 255 jail beds over the next five years.

Bozievich was elected to the Board of Commissioners in November 2010 and has previously served on the Lane Community College Board of Education, River Road-Santa Clara Urban Services Committee, and is a founding member of the Board for the River Road/Santa Clara Volunteer Library.

One challenger has stepped up to unseat the incumbent, Dawn Lesley, an engineer and a member of the Eugene Sustainability Commission.

Oregon And WSU’s Game Ends In America’s Enemy, A 0-0 Tie

$

The Oregon women soccer team has been struck with the tie bug lately, and the illness hasn’t let up with a 0-0 tie versus Washington State at home after two overtimes of play. This is the third straight tie for Oregon, having previously tied BYU 0-0 and San Francisco 1-1 after playing two overtimes in each of those games as well.

The Ducks offense was unable to penetrate a tough Cougars defense. Oregon managed three shots on goal the entire game compared to Washington State’s six. Then again, Oregon’s goalkeeper Abby Steele had to play a more important role on defense and she did, making twice as many saves (6) as her counterpart on the other side of the pitch.

Oregon head coach Kat Mertz talking to her team in between overtimes.

Oregon head coach Kat Mertz talking to her team in between overtimes.

Early on, it looked as if the Cougars were going to be the first on the board having won two corner kicks in the first fourteen minutes of play. Fouls, though, put a damper on Washington State’s early momentum and squandered many potential runs deep into Oregon’s side of the pitch.

Striking the ball on target for shots was also a big letdown for both sides. Compared to the three shots that were on goal, Oregon had a combined seven total shots from players Shanelle Simien, Kiyomi Cook, and Bri Pugh.

Washington State’s troubles kicking on target were much more costly though. In total, the Cougars ended the game with seventeen total shots from nine different players, but only six of them found their way on target.

Oregon will hope they lose the tie bug and get a win as they head on the road for the first time this season as they head to the Rockies to face Utah and Colorado next weekend. Washington State will continue their road trip as they head to Southern California next week for the UCLA and USC swing.

Oakridge Standoff Ends Peacefully; Man Arrested on Weapon Charge

A 55-year-old Oakridge man was arrested on a charge of unlawful use of a weapon after refusing to surrender to police for about two hours Friday afternoon, according to the Lane County Sheriff’s Office (LCSO).

An Oakridge Police officer attempted to contact Kelly Zang, 55, at his residence to conduct a welfare check at 11:56 a.m. When the officer attempted to contact Zang, a gunshot was fired from inside the residence in the officer’s direction.

The officer retreated from the residence and made a call for assistance, and was backed up by officers from Oakridge Police, Oregon State Police and LCSO. The officers secured the area, and had neighbors move away from their homes as a safety precaution.

Nearly two hours later, at 1:53 p.m., LCSO deployed an armored military surplus vehicle and moved it close to Zang’s residence, and Zang immediately surrendered with no further incident. The investigation is continuing and Zang will be lodged in Lane County Jail.
